NFL Crowd Erupts After Backup QB Enters And Immediately Throws A Touchdown. Is It His Job To Lose Now?

Gillette Stadium came to life on Monday when Bill Belichick benched quarterback Mac Jones for backup Bailey Zappe.

The New England Patriots offense led by the returning Mac Jones got down 10-0 in the first half to the 2-4 Chicago Bears on “Monday Night Football.” That’s when Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick benched Jones for the impressive backup, Bailey Zappe.

It took just four plays for Zappe and the Patriots offense to score a touchdown after Zappe entered the game. The rookie out of Houston Baptist and Western Kentucky hit wide-receiver, Jakobi Meyers, for a 30-yard touchdown pass to finally get the Patriots on the score board.

The energy inside of Gillette Stadium instantly shifted the moment Zappe got subbed into the game.

Zappe led the Patriots to a 2-0 record after Mac Jones got injured a month ago. He got their season back on track after the team got off to a poor 1-3 start. Even though Mac Jones is a great young player, the enthusiasm Patriots fans have for Zappe is remarkable.

Before half-time, Zappe led the Patriots to score another touchdown on the very next drive after the Meyers TD grab, to take the lead against Chicago. (RELATED: The Colts Bench Matt Ryan In Sign Of Desperation)

Just like in the Patriots Super Bowl winning season in 2o01, Belichick benched the apparent franchise quarterback for the backup riding a hot hand. From the looks of it, the quarterback job is now Zappe’s to lose.
